Application Process & Interviews at BCD Group

8.7
8.7 rating for Recruitment, based on 16 reviews
Please describe the interview process and assessments.
The interview process at BCD was thorough but friendly. It began with a phone call to discuss my background and motivations. This was followed by an in-person interview with a panel of senior engineers and managers. During this interview, the focus was on my passion for structural engineering, what led me to this field, and my personal hobbies. Since I was joining as an intern, there was little emphasis on advanced technical abilities. Instead, they were interested in my attitude, willingness to take on challenges, and how well I would fit within the team.

I did an interview with the office manager and discipline manager after which I secured an internship with BCD, at the end of my internship I was then offered a contract which I accepted to become a graduate engineer after I completed my last year at university.

The interview process is pretty streamlined. Two interviews - One with admin and the second with the technical team. Your overall attitude is most important. Whether you are willing to step up to the role and absorb what is given and whether you can bring positivity and mesh in with the team is a big deciding factor

What questions were you asked in your interviews?
In the interviews, I was asked about my academic background, including my experiences in high school and university, and the type of environment I grew up in. They were interested in understanding what led me to choose structural engineering as a career. I was also asked about my approach to problem-solving on projects, my ability to work in a team, and how I handle tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks. Additionally, I described a challenging project I had worked on in previous employment and explained how I overcame the obstacles.

Do you have any specific tips and advice for candidates applying to your company? How would you recommend they best prepare?
For candidates applying to BCD, I recommend thoroughly researching the company to understand its projects and culture. Be prepared to discuss your previous work & studies and how it aligns with the role you’re applying for. The specific questions will vary depending on the role you seek; however, for young professionals, the focus will generally be more on attitude and goals rather than technical skills. Showcasing strong communication skills and a collaborative attitude is crucial, as teamwork is highly valued at BCD.
Graduate, Auckland - 30 Jul 2024
Know what you want to do at the company and what your goals are. Be prepared to say what you do outside of work. Do some research on what geotech engineers do and maybe some simple questions about what the geology is in your area, although you will learn this on the job so if you don't know don't panic.
Graduate, Tauranga - 30 Jul 2024
Just be yourself. Be open, honest and have a jolly attitude.
Graduate, Hamilton - 26 Jun 2024
Prepare for the big change of environment, but don't stress yourself too much. Ask plenty of questions on how to do tasks.

Be relax. No need to be nervious.
Graduate, Hamilton - 09 Feb 2023
I highly recommend jumping at the opportunity to do an internship, it is paid and it gives you real world experience in the field, an idea of what the company is like to work for as well as getting your foot in the door to secure a full time job after study. It really fast tracked my career here and i feel like i have a much better understanding of how to do the job and use Revit better. My advice would be to reach out to the company asap even towards the end of your first year of study to show you are interested, be yourself and take a lot of pride in the work you do at University/Tech as this becomes your portfolio an can secure you a job.

Do your research and get familiar with BCD. Read the company values. This is a great company that is very invovled in the community and in sports. Get to know who the leadership team is and reach out to employees.
Graduate, Hamilton - 03 Feb 2023
They would best prepare by brining their true self. Better to be honest and explain to the best of your abilities what you can bring to the company. What you expect from them. Ask lots of questions.
Graduate, Tauranga - 31 Jan 2023
The thing I really liked about BCD was that they had a real focus on personality and that they could train you up knowledge wise but the most important thing was having a personality that would fit with the company. To best prepare I would recommend coming in as yourself and not trying to be who you think they want you to be. Do your research on BCD and find passion in the projects they are involved with and make sure you know its a place you want to work.
Graduate, Hamilton - 31 Jan 2023
don't be scared the people interviewing you are not as scary as they seem, if you could have samples of work you have done is always good for them to be able to see what your doing and talking about, and have a question for the company at the end no matte how small of a question
