When I succeed in doing a job on my own, I realise that I am capable of doing an IT job and that I am on the right career path.

What's your placement about?

NetStrategy is one of Australia's largest and most comprehensive consulting and managed services firms, with unique expert ICT knowledge gained from thousands of engagements over three decades. It offers services such as consulting, managed services, procurement, and project support. Furthermore, it offers cloud services, data analytics, security, connectivity, and remote working. As an intern, I provide daily backups for various clients, new user onboarding in various systems, research on ongoing projects, and training for the systems utilised inside the organisation.

In this IT organisation, I'm undertaking a three-day internship in a week. The working hours for a day start from 9AM to 5PM.  When I start the day's work, I initially join the group and say hello to everyone on the team. Then I begin working on the tickets that the Service Manager had allocated to me earlier in the day. Starting at 11 AM, I have to attend the daily stand-up meeting, which primarily discusses the tasks we will complete during the day.

What's your background?

I am originally from Nepal, where I completed my high school education in Science and Technology and my bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering.

To become a successful professional, we need to give more time and effort toward our study and learning process. In my life, I faced different stages to achieve the career path

  • Very hard to give time for study while working in Australia.
  • Difficult to adopt in Australian culture.
  • Difficult to manage the Australian education system.

Could someone with a different background do your placement?

I say yes because my university experience and degree are insufficient to get me a job right away. The working environment is vastly different from the classroom. As a result, most educational fields require internships to learn about the specific work done within the Organization.

To do the placement, we need to have different characteristics and skills:

  • Communication skills
  • Honesty
  • Loyalty
  • Teamwork
  • Flexibility
  • Self-reliance
  • Eagerness to learn

What's the coolest thing about your placement?

I enjoy doing actual IT work for clients during my internship, such as backup services for various clients, user and group management for various clients, networking troubleshooting, engaging with project groups and completing tasks, and so on. When I succeed in doing a job on my own, I realise that I am capable of doing an IT job and that I am on the right career path.

What are the limitations of your placement?

If the job role does not match the qualification, it may be difficult to comprehend real-world situations and take a long time to understand. Also, it's possible that it won't be everything we hoped for.

3 pieces of advice for your university-self?

  1. Everything In the University syllabus is useful for the real world job directly and indirectly, so don't ignore to learn from University.
  2. Focus on practical rather than theory.
  3. Learn one thing but become a professional on that. Example: if I am a programmer and doing python In University subject, I need to do extra course and give more time for self-study and become skilful on that, and it helps to get job on the programming sector.
