Bring your passion for ICT and power systems and your experience with analysis and programming. Truly meaningful work with an encouraging team.

Transpower is the owner and operator of the National Grid. At the heart of the electricity sector, we transport high voltage electricity from where it is generated to large electricity users and the distribution businesses that deliver it to homes and businesses nationwide.

Our large Information Services and Technology (IST) division delivers and supports the infrastructure and applications that work with the grid, facilitate system and grid operations, and support our corporate processes and systems.

About the team

The Application Services team, in IST, helps ensure that electricity is delivered to all New Zealanders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by maintaining and evolving complex critical IT systems. There are always new and exciting challenges to tackle and our work matters - a reliable electricity supply powers our economy and our lives and accelerating electrification is pivotal to achieving climate change goals.

As a wider team, we have been changing at a rapid pace, using new technologies to engineer modern web/mobile applications, intelligent AI embedded automation to streamline workflows and functions, and adopting open-source software and DevOps methodologies to accelerate product delivery.

About the opportunity

You'll join a knowledgeable team who ensure that technology-based enhancements or functionality are delivered to internal clients with minimal cost and time delays. We'll support you to:

  • Understand and contribute to software application architecture
  • Work closely with and provide third level support to the Application Support teams
  • Liaise with Test Manager/Analyst in reviewing of test plan to ensure appropriate coverage and performance

We'll also get you involved in introducing new capabilities for users by understanding their needs and exposing users to the available capabilities of technology through new developments.

What will you bring?

A flexible and adaptive approach and desire to think broadly to understand how what you do impacts both people and our wider systems. You'll love to learn and are passionate about software delivery and quality.

Your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science or other related field, or the equivalent work experience.
  • You'll have outstanding written and verbal communication skills and like to present technical concepts in an easy-to-understand way.
  • Some experience/understanding of working with applications DevOps toolchains for continuous build, integration, packaging, and deployment, and/or understanding of working in both Agile and Waterfall software development environments.

A year or more relevant analysis and programming experience in the technology as listed below is an advantage:

  • Strong coding skills, preferably in Java/.Net/JavaScript
  • Source control systems - preferably Git
