Focus on the Transmission Lines lifecycle from concept design through commissioning, to condition assessment and maintenance.

Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the unique High Voltage transmission lines network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand. We have more than 11,000km of transmission lines moving electricity from where it is generated to where it is used.

With a whole-of-industry view of the electricity sector, we are at the forefront of the country's pending electricity transformation. Our team is working hard to enable accelerated electrification, and a sustainable net carbon zero future.

The Opportunity

As a Transpower Graduate, commencing our programme in February 2023, you'll gain a range of skills and have the opportunity to put the theory and first principals you have learnt into practice to play a part in shaping the future of New Zealand's electricity industry.

Based at our Wellington head office you'll complete a circa two-year rotational programme, with regular coaching and mentoring from a range of experts.  You'll be provided with a hands-on overview our Grid Development and Grid Delivery Engineering areas. As a graduate you will undertake a range of tactical and operational engineering work on our Transmission Lines, Substations and Primary Assets, including Cost Estimation. You'll likely experience all stages of the project lifecycle from conception to delivery, to planning maintenance of the assets, and may be involved in:

  • Optimising NZ's overhead Transmission Line Network
  • Tower, pole and cross arm design and/or replacement projects
  • Initiatives in sustainability and safety in design using PLS-CADD
  • Identifying and studying risks to primary assets, and diagnosing incidents
  • Cost Estimation for engineering projects from $250k to $100m plus
  • Defining and delivering improvement recommendations for our assets

Building relationships across the business, you'll rotate through different engineering areas. You'll spend time in placements with Service Providers and/or Engineering Consultants, visit sites to gain technical understanding and depth, and develop outstanding people skills along with a good understanding of both internal and external customers.  Ultimately, you'll explore where and how you wish to shape your Engineering career with us.

What will you bring

By December 2022 you will hold a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical engineering or other relevant discipline e.g. Mechatronics, or Civil Engineering or you may be completing your masters or further study in a relevant field.

You'll have achieved/are achieving a B+ average or GPA of 5.5 or above in your studies and demonstrate curiosity, outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and active listening.

Good analytical and problem-solving skills will support your love of detail-orientated work/study, but conversely, you'll have an interest in the future of energy, be broad minded, and see challenges as opportunities.

While not essential, please tell us if you have:

  • Basic knowledge/experience of the New Zealand electricity supply industry
  • Skills in scripting/programming/coding
  • A foundational understanding of Transmission Assets
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant computer applications including MS Office
