Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the unique High Voltage transmission network. We have more than 11,000km of Transmission lines crossing mountain passes, forests, farmland and open sea, bringing electricity from where it is generated to where it is needed most.

With a whole-of-industry view of the electricity sector, we're at the forefront of the electrification and expansion of infrastructure New Zealand needs for a zero-carbon future.

Our Graduate Programme

In Graduate New Zealand's Top 100 for 2023, we were voted the No.1 graduate employer in the Energy and Utilities sector. Our Graduates tell us they enjoy:

  • Work that has real meaning
  • Our inclusive culture
  • Being part of a community and forming lasting bonds that they will take with them throughout their careers
  • The level of involvement they have in shaping their careers, which really can be 'Powered by you'

Commencing our programme in February 2024, you will be part of a cohort of 30 Engineering Graduates with various majors. You will gain a range of skills and put theory and first principles into practice while doing important work with a variety of different teams over your two-year rotational placement plan.

You'll receive coaching and mentoring from our technical experts to build your knowledge of Power System careers at Transpower. You will experience real work from day one!

The Opportunity

As a Transpower Graduate you will gain a range of skills and put theory and first principles into practice as you play a part in shaping the future of New Zealand's electricity industry.

Based at our Wellington head office you will complete a circa two-year rotational programme, including a range of tactical and operational engineering placements in our Transmission Lines, Substations and Primary Assets teams, including Cost Estimation. You'll likely experience all stages of the project lifecycle from conception to delivery, through to planning maintenance of the assets.

You may be involved in:

  • Optimising New Zealand's overhead Transmission Line Network
  • Tower, pole and cross arm design and/or replacement projects
  • Initiatives in sustainability and safety in design using PLS-CADD
  • Identifying and studying risks to primary assets, and diagnosing incidents
  • Cost Estimation for engineering projects from $250k to $100m plus
  • Defining and delivering improvement recommendations for our assets

Building relationships across the business, you'll rotate through different engineering areas. You'll spend time in placements with Service Providers and/or Engineering Consultants, visit sites to gain technical understanding and depth, and develop outstanding people skills along with a good awareness of internal and external customer needs.  Ultimately, you'll explore where and how you wish to shape your engineering career with us.

What you'll bring

By December 2023 you will hold a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical engineering or other relevant discipline e.g., Mechatronics, or Civil Engineering or you may be completing your masters or further study in a relevant field.

You'll have achieved/are achieving a B+ average or GPA of 5.5 or above in your studies and demonstrate curiosity, outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and active listening.

Good analytical and problem-solving skills will support your love of detail-orientated work/study, but conversely, you'll have an interest in the future of energy, be broad minded, and see challenges as opportunities.

While not essential, please tell us if you have:

  • Basic knowledge/experience of the New Zealand electricity supply industry
  • Skills in scripting/programming/coding
  • A foundational understanding of Transmission Assets
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant computer applications including MS Office
