Transpower owns and operates the National Grid, which is at the very heart of the New Zealand economy. We transport electricity from where it is generated to large electricity users and the distribution businesses that deliver it to homes and businesses nationwide. 

Our Information Services and Technology (IST) division delivers and supports the infrastructure and applications that work with the grid, facilitate system and grid operations and support our corporate processes and systems.

About the team

Our Application Services team helps ensure that electricity is delivered to all New Zealanders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by maintaining and evolving complex critical IT systems. The business domain we work within ensures there are always new and interesting challenges to tackle and that the work we do matters - electricity is essential to our economy, our health system, and the wellbeing of our citizens.

The wider team has been changing at a rapid pace, using new technologies to engineer modern web / mobile applications, intelligent AI embedded automation to streamline workflows and functions, adopting open-source software and DevOps methodologies to accelerate product delivery.

About the opportunity

As an Associate Software Engineer, you'll be part of a collaborative and knowledgeable team who ensure that technology-based enhancements or functionality are delivered to internal clients with minimal cost and time delays.  You'll also be part of introducing new capabilities for users by understanding their needs and exposing users to the available capabilities of technology through new developments. 

You will:

  • Work collaboratively in product teams with Business Analysts, Architects, other software engineers and Operations staff to define and deliver detailed application design and development to meet requirements
  • Conduct applications performance analysis and develop performance improvement, and/or remedial action plans
  • Understand and contribute to software application architecture
  • Work closely with and provide third level support to the Application Support teams
  • Liaise with Test Manager/Analyst in reviewing of test plan to ensure appropriate coverage and performance 

About you

You'll have a bachelor's degree in computer science or other related field or the equivalent work experience.  Your excellent communication skills (written and verbal) enable you to present technical concepts in an easy-to-understand way. 

You'll be flexible, adaptable and able to work on different tasks with different approaches. You like to think broadly to understand how your work contributes to the wider systems and strategic direction of Transpower. Most importantly, you're passionate about software delivery and quality and have a desire to learn.

To be considered, your CV and covering letter will demonstrate:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or related technical field. This is an entry level position which ideally requires one or more years of relevant analysis and programming experience, as listed in the desirable technology experience section below
  • Good application and integration development skills
  • Experience working with applications DevOps toolchains for continuous build, integration, packaging, and deployment
  • Experience/understanding of working in both Agile and Waterfall software development environments
  • Knowledge and experience of configuration management, quality assurance and testing methods

Desirable technology experience:

  • Strong coding skills, preferably in Java
  • IDE such as IntelliJ
  • Source control systems - preferably Git
  • Front-end technology such as React or Angular
