Our Graduate Programme

Commencing February 2025 in Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington, we invite you to be part of a cohort of 30 Engineering Graduates with various majors. You’ll gain a range of skills and put theory and first principles into practice while doing important work with a variety of different teams over your two-year rotational placement programme. Find out more at Transpower.co.nz/TranspowerGrads

Building relationships across the business, you’ll rotate through different engineering teams to gain both deep technical understanding and strengthen your soft skills, along with a good awareness of internal and external customer needs. We will help you explore where and how you wish to shape your career with us.

The opportunity

You'll complete placements with various teams; for example Operational and Tactical Protection, Power Electronics & HVDC, Planning, Scheduling & Optimisation, Primary Assets, Project Teams, Asset Planning and Substations Projects & Planning and Substations Standards.  This may require travel and a placement/s outside of Wellington.  You could be part of:

  • Substation design, delivery and standards; working with Service Providers in the field on new substation builds, commissioning new equipment, or maintenance projects
  • Protection and Automation projects from inception to completion
  • Fault analysis and engineering response to grid events, faults, and root cause analysis of failures
  • Learning about equipment and systems associated with Transpower's High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link, and power electronics assets (Static Synchronous Compensators, Static Var Compensators), Synchronous Condensers, and Regional Power Controllers

What will you bring?

By December 2024 you will have completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) ideally with electrical, electronics, mechatronics or power systems or you may be completing your master's or further study in a relevant field.

You'll be achieving/have achieved a minimum B+/5.5 grade point average in your studies and demonstrate curiosity, outstanding written and verbal communication, and active listening.

Good analytical and problem-solving skills will support your love of detail-orientated work/study, but conversely, you'll be interested in the big picture, and future of energy, making a difference to Aotearoa and having a positive impact on the communities we serve.

While not essential, the following skills are a plus, so please tell us if you have:

  • Basic knowledge/experience of the New Zealand electricity supply industry
  • Skills in scripting/programming/coding
  • A foundational understanding of one or more of the following: power system design and operation; static and dynamic modelling of power systems; and the behaviour of power system plant and equipment in service
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant computer applications including MS Office (PLS-CADD and/or PowerFactory would be an advantage)
