Operations Planning coordinates and assesses outages and provides engineering advice to enable the safe and secure operation of the power system. The team prepares plans and advice for the real time control room teams on operational engineering to maintain system security.

About the Opportunity

We're seeking an Operations Planning Engineer to join the team in Wellington.

Working in Operations Planning is a great way to gain deep technical knowledge of how we operate the National Grid, how we assess outages, and how we manage the changes and risks that Grid activities have on the New Zealand electricity market. The team works across different time frames - from near real-time to looking at major projects and changes on the Grid over the longer term - so there is the potential to be involved in a variety of work.

We're looking for someone who has both a positive outlook and the energy to learn operations planning quickly. You'll also bring your own expertise to help us drive process, technical and engineering improvements.

This role may suit a Electrical Engineering graduate with 1 - 2 years of work experience under their belt.

What you'll be doing

You'll provide technical assessments and planning advice for outages and changes to the Grid. You'll also develop close relationships with our other operations teams; particularly the real time operators, power system planning and markets and business teams.

Typical operations planning work includes:

  • Carrying out power flow analysis to assess the impacts of taking Grid assets out of service and conveying the outcomes to internal and external customers
  • Advising our customers on the market impacts of taking assets out of service, of changing their capabilities, and on special protection schemes
  • Ensuring the system operator tools and models are updated with changes in asset capability and newly commissioned equipment
  • Contributing to or leading event reviews
  • Collaborating with and engaging other parts of Operations or Transpower to drive improvements

We have a structured training programme in place to allow you to quickly learn the tools and processes used in this role.

To broaden your skillset, and for job variety, you may work in any of the three Operations Planning teams involved in System Security, Planning and Project Support, and Network Modelling and Commissioning.

To be considered, your CV and covering letter will demonstrate:

  • An Engineering qualification and power systems engineering experience OR you may not be an Engineer but have relevant experience e.g. electricity market, analytical or technical experience, works planning, scheduling
  • Experience in problem solving, analysing solutions and conveying those outcomes
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong time management and attention to detail
  • Flexibility i.e. you can make quick decisions based on the best information to hand at the time

Knowledge of Power Systems, Protection systems, Electricity Industry Participation Code, High Voltage plant and equipment and generation plant will be highly regarded.
