Pros & Cons

  • The kindness of my fellow employees is something that blew me away when I first began, and it's something I continue to take pride in. Everyone genuinely cares about you on a personal level, there are many amazing perks including fortnightly rostered days off, and there is no pressure to take on more than what you can handle.
  • The best thing about working at Transgrid as a graduate is all the workshops and training I get to attend and learn, Transgrid invests a lot in my self-development and career development
  • Hybrid mode of working, respect and friendliness amongst team members thanks to the manager's facilitation, and meaningful participation (being supported and later trusted with important responsibilities and system-access privileges).
  • Transgrid has a strong culture of value for each employee. They really consider the personal goals/ambitions of the employee and work on any projects or opportunities around employee values. Everyone acts as ONE business and goes out of their way to lend a hand to those who ask, regardless of business department or position. Communication here is quite easy and everyone's voice is heard; you need to speak up.
  • Transgrid is invested in me. Excellent development opportunities, good pay and benefits, work-life balance.
  • The opportunity to work on large projects which will have an impact on the future.
  • Really love working at Transgrid, the only bad thing I can think of is when your team gives you work that puts you on the sidelines (but this is on rare occasions and depends on your team).
  • The only thing I can say for me would be the travel time.
  • Tech support, some uncertainty/lack of notice for grad rotations.
  • Being in such a big company, its hard to get access to resources as you need them and can add a lot of time and friction to getting some tasks done.
  • Sometimes the feeling of disconnect between teams.
  • Some rotations you may work on less interesting projects. This doesn't mean the projects are less important.

I'm in a 2 year grad program where I get 4x6 month rotations in various business areas. There are plenty of opportunities to grow and connect with various business areas throughout.

Engagements with indigenous communities. Stakeholder involvement prior to possession of site. Community outreach programs. I have personally worked on an R&D project with one of Sydney's top universities which engaged students in working with real-world projects and empowered their level of employability.

Culture

Culture
The culture is great. Most people are incredibly friendly and are happy to help and talk when needed. Outside of the office, I have only caught up with some other graduates and it was great fun. There is a clear structure and hierarchy but for the most part, people in the higher positions are very approachable to help with issues.

Diversity
As a neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+ woman, I've found this company incredibly accepting and understanding of me as an individual. There are many smaller groups including LGBTQIA+ and women's groups which allow for safe spaces in the company to discuss any issues in a place where you will be listened to and heard. I never found there to be an issue with anything I have mentioned to staff, everyone has been understanding and accepting of me right off the bat which has been an amazing experience.

Satisfaction
The work is challenging and engaging. I am given important work and am generally provided with the necessary support to complete it. Rarely, I find myself underworked while waiting for senior staff to review/instruct me further.

My manager is very supportive, friendly and collaborative at all times and acts as a direct mentor to me. He takes extra time out to teach me new things.

Office Work Environment
Office space in Ultimo is fancy like all office buildings in the city, however, our Sydney West office has bigger space and feels more 'home-like'. The dress code is generally mixed: at Ultimo people dress in more formal office wear, however, at Sydney West, there are a greater number of field staff so we either wear our yellow high vis shirts or wear casual office wear.

Pay is very competitive when compared to other graduate positions. Overtime is available and lots of resources are available to ensure that employees aren't doing things out of pocket for work.

Transgrid takes learning and development very seriously and presents staff with many opportunities to improve their skills through a variety of training workshops.

Work Hours
The company is very flexible when it comes to work hours, making it easy to work from home if preferred (I primarily work from home, going into the office once a week to see team members). Managers are understanding when it comes to needing flexibility for a variety of reasons, however as with anything it's important to communicate this with them as soon as possible.

Sustainability

Sustainability
Transgrid puts a lot of emphasis on supporting renewables and investigating battery opportunities, even supporting renewable vehicle development and owning a fleet of electric vehicles. However, the nature of our work has an environmental impact. Where reasonably practicable, this is mitigated or reduced.
